Hawaii confirms third case of rat lungworm disease in Big Island resident

State health officials have confirmed a case of rat lungworm disease in a resident on Hawaii?s Big Island.

The resident, who lives in East Hawaii and was not identified by the State of Hawaii Department of Health, contracted the disease on the state?s Big Island. The case marks the third confirmed case of rat lungworm disease in the state this year.

3 Hawaii island visitors confirmed to have contracted rat lungworm disease

The state Health Department has received confirmation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of three unrelated cases of rat lungworm disease diagnosed in visitors to Hawaii island.

All three were adults from the U.S. mainland visiting Hawaii between now and last year when they were infected with the parasitic roundworm causing rat lungworm disease. The disease can have debilitating effects on an infected person?s brain and spinal cord.

One of the individuals visited East Hawaii in December 2018 and became infected after eating a slug on a dare. The other two individuals traveled to Hawaii island?s west side, and the exact source of their infections remains unknown, but one consumed homemade salads and the other ate unwashed fruits and vegetables.

An invasive half-slug creature could be behind the cases of rat lungworm disease in Hawaii, a new study finds.

Between 2007 and 2017, 82 cases of the parasitic infection have been recorded in the Aloha State.

Rat lungworm disease is caused by a parasite carried by rats, which excrete larvae that slugs or snails ingest.

Humans then knowingly or unknowingly eat the slugs and snails that are often hiding in unwashed produce.

Clinically known as angiostrongyliasis, the disease attacks the brain and spinal cord, and can even result in paralysis...

DOH: Visitor to Hawaii Island contracts 6th confirmed case of rat lungworm disease

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) -The State Department of Health has confirmed the sixth case of rat lungworm disease in the state. It was recently detected in a visitor to Hawaii Island.

According to the DOH, the latest visitor to contract the disease lives on the mainland. The individual fell ill in early February and was hospitalized back in the states.
