Hand-foot-mouth outbreak worsens in Vietnam

HO CHI MINH CITY - The number of children in HCM City coming to hospitals with hand-foot-mouth (HFM) disease has been increasing steadily in the last two weeks, according to doctors.

Dr Truong Huu Khanh, head of the infectious and neurological diseases ward at the Paediatric Hospital No 1, said the number of children being hospitalised every day has almost doubled the average 20 in the recent past.

On Thursday alone, 35 were admitted, he said, five in serious condition and requiring a respirator. One child died a few days ago due to severe complications after being admitted to hospital late, he added.

The Paediatric Hospital No.2 admitted 27 children on Thursday.

Dr Nguyen Dac Tho, deputy head of the city Preventive Medicine Centre, said from an average of 30 per day in the last two weeks, the number has increased to 80.

So far this year, out of the 600 children who contracted the disease - mostly belonging to the City - three had died, he said.

Doctors are worried since usually there are no early fatalities in the early part of the year. Normally the disease peaks between October and December though there are also many cases in the period from March to May...

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) has taken the lives of six children in Ho Chi Minh City hospitals so far this year, while only one died from the disease last year, according to the municipal Health Department.

The department on Wednesday released a warning that the number of children admitted to city-based hospitals for HFMD is rising, with many children having complications.

Nguyen Dac Tho, deputy director of the HCMC Health Center, said a total 1,200 HFMD cases have been recorded this year.

In April alone, 595 kids were admitted to hospital for HFMD treatment.

Most of the patients are below three years old, Tho added.

According to the Children?s Hospital No.1, it receives more than 60 HFMD child patients a day and most of them come from neighboring provinces.

The Children?s Hospital No.2 reported 10 percent of children have complications.

There are 300 more HFMD cases in the first four months of this year compared to the same period last year, the Health Department announced.

HFMD is a human syndrome caused by intestinal viruses of the Picornaviridae family. The most common strains causing HFMD are Coxsackie A virus and Enterovirus 71 (EV-71)...
