JON MEILSTRUP

Jon W. Meilstrup, MD Hershey, Pennsylvania Jon W. Meilstrup, MD, FAIUM, FACR, FSRU emeritus, died in Hershey, Pennsylvania on November 13, 2009 from complications of the flu and cancer.
He was the son of the late Dr. John G. and Elizabeth Meilstrup. He is survived by his wife Susan, his eight children Jon, Tricia, Matthew, David, Mark, Steven, Sharon and Karin, and their families, including 11 grandchildren, as well as a brother Alan and a sister Anne. He loved God, his wife and family, his friends, music, his profession, and his country. He served actively in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a stake patriarch, stake president and presidency councilor, and other callings, especially as organist and choir director. He had numerous awards as a piano soloist. As a young teenager, he was the first to perform twice as a piano soloist with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, and he obtained a degree in organ performance under the late Dr. Alexander Schreiner, then Mormon Tabernacle Organist. He excelled in academics, graduating first in a class of 770 from his high school, and in college was honored in the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies. He attended medical school at the University of Utah, and did a residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was then stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he became the chief of ultrasound, and later supervised the body imaging fellowship. He received the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Meritorious Service Medal. After five years of active military duty, he then worked three years in private radiology practice before returning to his love of teaching and advanced clinical practice at the Hershey Medical Center, where he was employed 20 years. He was recognized as an expert in ultrasound, with particular interest in thyroid and parathyroid sonography and procedures, and served in national ultrasound organizations, helping to develop the first joint abdominal ultrasound guideline for world-wide practice across two societies, as well as developing other ultrasound standards of practice. While quiet by nature, he attempted to serve, teach and help others in a gracious and kind manner, exemplifying what he deeply believed. The funeral will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4788 Union Deposit Rd., Harrisburg, PA on Monday, November 16, 2009 at 11:00a.m. A time with the family prior to the funeral is available at 10:00a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 800 Corporate Circle, Harrisburg, PA. The Hoover Funeral Home & Crematory in Hershey is handling the arrangements.
