Title : Twelve Hepatitis B cases reported in Sabarkantha district, Gujarat.
Description : Twelve cases of the deadly Hepatitis B virus have been reported from Illol village, 6 km away from Himmatnagar, in the past fortnight. Medical teams have been rushed to the village to cope with the disease which had killed 73 persons in north Gujarat, especially Modassa town, last year. Chief district health officer SK Makhwana of Sabarkantha said, "So far, we have received over 30 cases with symptoms of this disease. Of these, 12 of these cases have been confirmed positive for Hepatitis B after tests in Ahmedabad." "The symptoms have been seen in persons in the age group of 20 to 35 years," Makhwana told TOI, adding, "The extent of the disease is not alarming as we had witnessed in Modasa last year. Despite an intensive survey, we have not been able to get any specific reason for the spread of the disease within such a short span of 15 days." In the beginning, half a dozen patients had shown rise of Serum Glucose Phosphate Tri-aminase (SGPT) level up to 4,000 which confirms alarming dimension of the disease. However, now SGPT levels have has come down in the patients with proper treatment and no casualty has been reported so far," he said. Illol is a small town of 10,000 inhabitants, mostly Muslim.
