Heart patient with swine flu dies in Greece
ATHENS, Aug 23, 2009 (AFP) - Greece reported its first death related to swine flu on Sunday, a 23-year-old heart patient who contracted the A(H1N1) virus in an Athens hospital.
In a statement, the health ministry said the male patient at Onassio Hospital -- who had a serious heart condition and a pulmonary infection -- had contracted the flu "in the last two days".
It added that the man -- who had been in hospital since August 7 -- did not technically qualify as a swine flu death "under international scientific statistics".
On July 31 the health ministry said all 11 million people in Greece would be vaccinated "without exception" against swine flu, but later said that jabs would be administered on a voluntary basis.
Over 1,400 swine flu cases have been recorded in Greece, most of them visitors from abroad, the health ministry says.
