Hearing loss from mumps more common than thought

Hearing loss due to complications from mumps, a highly contagious viral disease that causes painful swellings, is more common than doctors had realized, according to a study.
Makoto Fujimori of Fujimori Childrens Clinic in Chiba teamed up with Shinichi Tanihara of the pediatrics department at Tokyo Women's Medical University's Yachiyo Medical Center for the study involving children and adults. They found that about one in 300 mumps patients develops hearing impairment, or about 3.3 times the rate that doctors normally expect.
The team analyzed 1.58 million public medical insurance receipts and identified 2,822 people who were diagnosed with mumps from April 2014 through March 2015. Of them, 10 received steroid therapy, indicating that one in 282 mumps patients developed hearing difficulty.
?Our finding underscored anew the high probability of hearing loss among mumps patients,? said Fujimori, noting that past studies generally did not have such a wealth of data to analyze.
