JACKSON, Miss. - WAPT.com

School and health officials on Monday urged parents to keep sick children home in an effort to slow the spread of swine flu.

The number of swine flu cases, also known as H1N1, has reached 838 in Mississippi, with three deaths, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health

Web site

?You're contagious with the swine flu 24 hours before you (become sick), so by the time you go to the doctor, you've already been exposing people for two-to-three days,? Dr. James Gordon, of the Ears, Nose and Throat Clinic on Lakeland Drive. ?Go home. Keep your child away from other people.?

Swine Flu Special Section

Symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of seasonal flu, causing fever, respiratory symptoms and body aches.

Prevention is the best method of protection, and Mississippians are encouraged to take the following precautions to reduce the risk of contracting swine flu and other flu-like illnesses: Wash your hands frequently or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer; cough or sneeze into your sleeve; or cough into a tissue followed by hand-washing; and avoid close contact with those who are sick. If you are ill, stay home until you are well, unless you need to see a doctor, in which case call first to prevent possible transmission in the doctor's waiting area.

A vaccine against H1N1 swine flu is currently being developed and will be available by mid-October, MSDH officials said.
