Minister of Health and Welfare Shih Chung-liang (石崇良) yesterday urged people to avoid contact with poultry or wild birds when traveling abroad, in response to the first reported human death from complications of H5N5 avian influenza (bird flu) in the US on Friday last week.
The Washington State Department of Health on Friday confirmed that a resident of the state — an older adult with underlying health conditions — who was undergoing treatment for bird flu died that day.

The CDC urged people to implement “five dos and six do nots” in daily life to prevent the risk of novel influenza A virus infection.
The dos are: Thoroughly cook meat and eggs; frequently wash hands thoroughly with soap; wear a mask when symptoms appear and inform the doctor about recent travel or exposure when seeking medical attention; get a flu vaccine if work involves contact with poultry; and keep a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
The six do nots are: Do not eat raw or undercooked eggs or egg products; do not buy meat from unclear sources; do not approach or feed livestock; do not release or abandon livestock, do not allow domestic livestock to cohabit with other animals; and avoid going to poorly ventilated or crowded venues.
