The health directorate has undertaken a programme to create mass awareness about bird flu or avian influenza which is taking its heavy toll on the country's poultry industry.

"Under the programme, we are arranging `Multisectoral Avian Influenza Orientation Meeting' in the district headquarters across the country to raise awareness about bird flu among the people at all levels," Dr M Mushtuq Husain, senior scientific officer of the IEDCR under the Directorate General of Health Service, told BSS today.

He said government and NGO officials, health workers, community leaders, public representatives and representatives of local Muktijoddha Sangsad and other organizations are participating in the meetings.

Dr Mushtuq said since August 1 such meetings were held in 11 districts under two divisions.

The districts are Faridpur, Madaripur, Manikganj, Munshiganj, Narsingdi and Jamalpur in Dhaka division and Patuakhali, Bhola and Pirojpur in Barisal division.

Besides, he said, training on bird flu is being given to 50 health education officers and volunteers in each union of the country. In addition to that, training on infectious, food and water- borne diseases is being imparted to them.

Dr Mushtuq said IEDCR (Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research) in cooperation with the National Influenza Centre (NIC) is disseminating health message containing steps on bird flu to the people across the country for displaying on walls or at higher places.

About 2.50 crore people of the country got the message through health workers and volunteers in last one year, he said, adding the number of informed people is likely to be doubled in the next one year.

According to IEDCR sources, bird flu has so far broken out in 61 countries and H5N1 virus was detected in 15 countries till June this year. The sources said 385 people contracted the disease across the globe till June 30 this year, of them 243 died. :tiphat: http://www.bangladeshinfo.com/news/other_news_head.php?othid=46816
