Health authorities have advised children not to pat dogs or cats without their owners or to feed them in preparation for the risk of bird flu.

The Disease Control Headquarters and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock Food and Rural Affairs announced today (April 4) the "Children and Youth AI Prevention Rules" that contain such information.

According to the precautionary act, the health authorities first instructed the children to refrain from visits to farmhouses where migratory birds, chickens and ducks are raised, and to touch dead animals.

They also advised not to touch, pet or feed animals, such as birds, cats, dogs, etc., that they do not have owners or meet in the open air, and that cats or dogs raised at home should not go out alone.

"It is very unlikely that AI will be infected to humans through cats, but to emphasize basic preventive measures for children and adolescents who are increasing their outdoor activities and increasing contact time with their pets for winter vacation," the health authorities said.

In addition, the health authorities urged children and adolescents to contact their local public health center or the Disease Control Center call center (☎ 1339) if they develop fever and cough or sore throat within 10 days of contact with dead wild animals.:tiphat:http://news.kbs.co.kr/news/view.do?ncd=3405429
