A case of bird flu of the H7 strain was registered in Bulgaria's northern town of Shumen, officials reported Friday.

The virus has been found in a killed wild duck in Kamchiya River valley, between the villages of Khan Krum and Milanovo.

"The H7 strain is proved dangerous for the birds but we still cannot claim it could not affect people as well," the director of the regional veterinary medicine service Hristo Hristov said.

"The migratory bird was just a carrier of the virus," he added.

The authorities guaranteed they are to take immediate precautionary measures for stopping the virus' spread and called on the local people not to panic.

The deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza emerged in southeastern Asia in 2003, taking the lives of 180 people, with Indonesia hit the worst.

It has spread throughout the world, causing millions of poultry to be culled as a precautionary measure.

Several southeastern European countries have undergone bird flu scares since 2005, most notably Romania, which has spent millions in hard currency on flu vaccines and to destroy infected birds to prevent its spread.

The virus can now be transmitted only from poultry to people, but scientists fear it could mutate into a form that can be transmitted among humans, which could trigger a flu pandemic that would put millions of lives at risk.

It Italy from May to November 2007 there were a quite widespread epizootics caused by LPAI A/H7N3 with almost twenty foci. However, media coverage was null; vaccination campaign was implemented.

LPAI H7N3 IN ITALY: EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION
30th October 2007
Since the end of May, 2007, eighteen LPAI outbreaks caused by a type A AI virus of the H7 and H5 subtype have occurred in Italy (Table 1). Eleven outbreaks have been identified in back-yard flocks or in dealer farms supplying the rural and hobby poultry sectors (last outbreak confirmed on 29 October 2007 in Torino province). On 22 August 2007, an H7N3 LPAI virus was isolated in a meat turkey holding located in the Municipality of Paderno
Francia-Corta in the Province of Brescia, Lombardia Region. From 22 August to 30 October 2007, another 6 LPAI infected meat turkey holdings were identified in the same Region (last outbreak on 4 October 2007 in Brescia province).
Phylogenetic analysis of the HA gene of the virus isolated starting from 19 July 2007 indicated that all the viruses identified were part of the Eurasian lineage of H7 viruses and presenting high homology among them. HA and NA sequences with respective homologies of 94.5% and 93.5% did not show these isolates to be closely related to the previous H7N3 LPAI virus isolated during an outbreak in rural chickens in May, 2007, in Venice Province, Veneto Region. Similarly, all the H7N3 LPAI viruses isolated in 2007 were unrelated to the H7N3 virus that caused the 2002-2004 LPAI epidemic in Italy.
Furthermore, on 14 August 2007, an LPAI virus of the H5N2 subtype was isolated in a free-range goose and duck breeder flock in Emilia-Romagna Region. The HA gene of this virus strain was not phylogenetically related (93.2% homology) to the H5N2 LPAI virus that caused the 2005 epidemic in Lombardia Region, whereas the HA gene showed a higher level of homology (98.5%) with H5N2 LPAI viruses isolated from wild waterfowl in Germany in 2005.

Duck with bird flu shot in Bulgaria's Shoumen

A duck shot in Bulgaria's northeastern region of Shoumen was identified as carrying the H7 strain of avian influenza, the country's Agriculture and Food Supply Ministry said on February 1.

The strain poses no danger to humans, unlike the potentially lethal H5N1 viral strain, the ministry said in a statement.

However, samples taken from the duck were sent to the UK, for diagnostic at the Weybridge EU reference laboratory for avian influenza.

The ministry has already ordered precautionary measures to prevent the virus from spreading, the ministry said.

Please, someone could answer some questions:

* Media coverage for Wales LPAI H7N2 has been large and prolonged;

* Again, Canadian experience was highly represented in the news;

* Now, Bulgaria detects a mallard duck infected with HPAI H7;

* In Italy, at least twenty epizootics have been reported for several months but national and international media coverage was null. Why?

* Are Our LPAI H7N3 and LPAI H5N2 less interesting? Less dangerous? Are our poultry consumed only in Italy? (Noooo!)

* I dont' understand this silence. Really!:surrender:

maybe it's because the situation in Italy is ongoing
and persistent since long.

I remember the 1999/2000 H7N1 outbreak which mutated
from LP to HP. Many outbreaks since then, sometimes epidemic
sometimes below the radar.

The post #4 contains a brief report from IZSVE about current italian situation. Epizootics continued until late november 2007, when vaccination campaign was initiated.
