NORTH KOREA - The North Korean veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of highly pathigenic H5N1 bird flu in Hwanghae-Bukto.
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 1 on Tuesday, 22 April. According to the report, the affected population comprises chickens and geese.
A total of 501 birds were found susceptible to the outbreak, out of which all birds were found affected. A total of 136 deaths were reported and the remaining 365 birds were destroyed.
Birds in Hwanghae-Bukto and P'yongyang-Si have been vaccinated. in Hwanghae-Bukto, a total of 20000 chickens were vaccinated while in P'yongyang-Si, a total of 530,000 chickens received vaccination (240000 chickens in Hadang Chicken Factory and 290000 chickens in Sopo Chicken Factory).
According to the OIE, all birds in infected cages were killed by formalin gas of 60g per m3.
The source of the outbreaks remains inconclusive.
