H1N1 virus found in Buchanan County

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Officials announced Buchanan County?s first reported case of H1N1 influenza, or swine flu, on Wednesday.

The St. Joseph/Buchanan County Health Department stated in a press release that Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph had received confirmation about a case of the virus in the area from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

The release said the person who contracted the illness had contact with someone who had traveled to an affected area.

A nursing supervisor for Heartland said she had no information about the case.

On Wednesday evening, Bill Brinton, Buchanan County emergency management director, said he hadn?t been contacted by the health department on the illness but that it would be monitored closely.

?All of our emergency response people are on a committee that works closely with the health department,? he said.

According to the press release, Missouri has stockpiled vaccines to treat more than 600,000 people infected with the influenza. The vaccines were distributed to each county in the state, including Buchanan County.

The health department warns people that symptoms of the virus include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Diarrhea and vomiting also have been reported in some cases.

People who have traveled to areas reported to have H1N1 flu cases or who have been in direct contact with someone who has the virus are advised to contact their health care provider.

Story Updated: 9:57 a.m.

Buchanan County’s confirmed case of the H1N1 virus involved an infant who is expected to make a full recovery.

The infant, whose name and gender was not disclosed, was treated at a local hospital’s emergency room over the weekend. It was not clear whether the patient was admitted into the hospital, but local health officials said the infant was currently at home.

As far as I know,??? the child is doing well,” said Ron Tolen, the health department’s epidemiology specialist. “A full recovery is expected.”
Glad he cleared that up before we all got worried!
Late Wednesday, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services confirmed lab results that showed the child had the H1N1 virus, sometimes referred to as the swine flu.

all green font is my opinion
