ATLANTA -- November 9, 2010 -- Children with rheumatologic conditions should receive H1N1 vaccination, according to results of a study presented here at the 2010 Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Rheumatology/Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals (ACR/ARHP).
"The benefits of vaccination with H1N1 monovalent inactivated vaccine outweighed the risk in this group of patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases," stated Catherine F. Cortot, MD, Children's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, speaking here at a poster presentation on November 8. "Children with chronic rheumatic inflammatory disease are more susceptible to infections," she added. These children were a target group for immunisation with H1N1 influenza vaccine; however, the safety and efficacy of the vaccine in such patients was not previously known.
This prospective study assessed the toxicity profile and effectiveness during actual use of the H1N1 vaccine in children with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases from the rheumatology clinic of a large, tertiary-care children's hospital. Eligible patients (n = 120) had received at least 1 dose of the influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent, unadjuvanted, inactivated vaccine.
