H1N1-related death reported in area
POSTED: November 25, 2009
ESCANABA - An area resident has died as a result of the H1N1 virus, according to Public Health, Delta & Menominee Counties officials.
Public Health said it received confirmation of the first H1N1 influenza-related death in its two-county district Tuesday. The agency covers Delta and Menominee counties.
"The deceased was an adult with underlying medical conditions, the agency said in a press release. While most people infected with the H1N1 influenza virus experience mild to moderate illness, sadly, hospitalizations and deaths have occurred in Michigan and nationwide," the agency said in a press release.
Public Health has reported the death to the Michigan Department of Community Health, which is tracking the severity and spread of the H1N1 virus in the state.
Public Health is releasing little information on the death. "No further information regarding the case will be disclosed to protect the privacy of the family," the agency stated in its press release.
Another H1N1-related death was reported earlier this month in the Dickinson-Iron County area by that region's health department.
