Hong Kong Shares Chill On Swine Flu
Vivian Wai-yin Kwok, 06.18.09, 12:35 AM EDT

The rapid surge of swine flu cases in Hong Kong dampened investment sentiment.

HONG KONG--Hong Kong stocks continued to lose ground Thursday, following the downward trend of New York and Tokyo. The rapid spread of swine flu in Hong Kong also triggered worries after the city confirmed 54 new cases on Wednesday.
Hong Kong?s Hang Seng Index traded down 2.0% at 17,715.56 at midday.

Banking stocks in Hong Kong declined across the board after ratings agency Standard & Poor's cut its ratings on 18 U.S. banks overnight, citing expectations of more difficult operating conditions due to volatile financial markets and tighter regulation.

Global leader HSBC Holdings ( HBC - news - people ) lost 1.2% to 65.90 Hong Kong dollars ($8.45). H-shares of Bank of China ( BACHF - news - people ) sank 3.4% to 3.49 Hong Kong dollars (45 cents) while Industrial and Commercial Bank of China ( IDCBF - news - people ) shed 3.6% to 5.13 Hong Kong dollars (66 cents).

Analysts expected the benchmark to drop below 18,000 level soon as the continued spread of H1N1 influenza virus also weighed on investment sentiment. Hong Kong confirmed 54 new cases on Wednesday, a drastic surge that brought the total number of confirmed patients to 172.

Hong Kong Reported 54 New Human Swine Flu Cases

A spokesman for the Hong Kong Department of Health said the department was investigating 54 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1). Thirteen of them are imported while 41 are local.

This brings to 172 the total number of human swine influenza (HSI) cases in Hong Kong.

The new cases involved 32 female and 22 male aged between three and 55. All of them are in stable condition and have been admitted to public hospitals for medical treatment.

Among them are 26 students of the Hong Kong Australian International School and the father of an affected student. This brings to 29 the total number of people affected in the cluster.

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old girl studying in ECF Saint Too Canaan College in Kwun Tong was confirmed to have infected with HSI. The school will suspend class for two weeks starting tomorrow.

A 29-year-old female nurse serving the Pediatric Ward of the United Christian Hospital (UCH) was confirmed to have infected with HSI. She has been admitted to UCH in stable condition.

DH is tracing close contacts of the patients.

In light of the development of HSI in Hong Kong, the spokesman noted that some disease control measures would be implemented tomorrow.

"The administration of directly observed chemoprophylaxis to or quarantine of close contacts of HSI patients will be stopped. Flight passengers in close contact with HSI patients will not be traced.

"Household contacts of confirmed patients will be put under medical surveillance and health advice will be provided," the spokesman said.

Flu fight rethink

Patsy Moy

Friday, June 19, 2009

The government is poised to scale down its handling of human swine flu (H1N1) victims by only admitting those in a serious condition to hospital.
Health chiefs will also be more sparing with anti-viral drug Tamiflu, giving it only to those with symptoms and not people who come into contact with them, a source told The Standard.

The adjustments are in line with the transition from the preventive approach to one of mitigation as more local cases are discovered, officials say.

"Now we have more confirmed cases we have a clearer picture of human swine flu, such as the symptoms are usually very mild," the source said. "So there is a need to ease our measures or we will no longer be able to cope with the rapid growth in the patient population."

Meanwhile, five more secondary schools were ordered to close for two weeks from today after one student from each institution was confirmed to be suffering from swine flu.

However, a government committee chaired by Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen failed after a two-hour meeting to order the closure of all schools as had been widely expected.

Centre for Health Protection controller Thomas Tsang Ho-fai said the government will announce on Tuesday whether all primary schools, kindergartens and nurseries will resume classes on Friday as scheduled.

The secondary schools closed from today are GT (Ellen Yeung) College, King George V School, South Island School, American International School and TWGH Li Ka Shing College.

Their students were among the 49 new confirmed cases yesterday, taking the tally to 221 so far. Of the new infections, 28 were local. A total of 10 secondary schools have been closed so far.

"One of the concerns about closing all schools is that the students may go out if they don't attend classes and that could even speed up infections in the community," another source close to the health authorities said.

A United Christian Hospital nurse, who was confirmed with human swine flu on Wednesday, is now suspected of contracting the virus from the parents of a 10-month-old baby when they took their child to hospital.

Macau has also recorded its first case of human swine flu - a Filipino man who arrived on a Cebu Pacific flight from Manila.

He was intercepted at Macau airport on Wednesday with fever and immediately sent to hospital for isolation. The Macau government has also started to trace the passengers sitting near him on the plane.

In a related development, a joint study by the Chinese University and the Hong Kong Observatory found influenza A has become more prevalent in summer, contrary to the common belief that winter is flu season.

The number of patients admitted with flu to Prince of Wales Hospital during the summer was around 20 a week before 2004, but that jumped drastically to more than 130 a week in the summer of 2005.

The correlation was established based on records of hospital admissions to Prince of Wales Hospital and weather data collected between 1997 and 2006.

The findings also show June and July are the summer peak for influenza while other peaks for both influenza A and B are in February and March.

Considering that vaccines take one to three weeks to become effective and the protection lasts for only a few months, Chinese University microbiology professor Paul Chan Kay- sheung said the best time to receive the flu vaccine would be in November and December.

"Receiving the vaccine too early may not offer protection for the summer peak, which is getting more severe in Hong Kong. Receiving vaccine too late would miss protection for the winter/ spring peak," Chan said.

He fears global warming will help the mutation of the flu virus, but said further studies are needed to confirm the hypothesis.

H1N1 FLU PANDEMIC
HK flu cases hit 221

HONG KONG - HONG Kong on Thursday reported 49 newly confirmed cases of H1N1 flu, bringing to 221 the total number of cases in the southern Chinese city.

All the new cases, involving 22 male and 27 female patients aged between one and 55, were in a stable condition after being admitted to public hospitals, the Department of Health said.

'Six of the cases are imported, while 28 are local. Classification of the other 15 cases is still pending,' the department said.

Among the cases were three boys and two girls from five secondary schools that had now been advised to suspend classes for two weeks from Friday, the department added.

Last week, authorities ordered all primary schools in the city to be closed for two weeks after the first cluster of local H1N1 flu cases was found.

When Hong Kong discovered its first case, in early May, health authorities quarantined around 300 guests and staff at a hotel where the carrier, a Mexican, had briefly stayed.

Hong Kong is nervous about infectious diseases following the outbreak of the Sars virus in 2003, which killed 300 people here and a further 500 around the world.

Influenza A(H1N1) has infected nearly 40,000 people around the world in 89 countries and territories, causing 167 deaths since late March, according to the latest World Health Organisation data. -- AFP
