Swine flu (H1N1pdm09) was the dominant strain of influenza this year in the United States. There were 10s of thousands of confirmed cases in the US this year (see http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/weeklyarchives2013-2014/data/whoAllregt24.htm ) which implies hundreds of thousands of actual cases . The pandemic strain is now a regular seasonal flu strain.

There's something unusual about this report. A single H1N1 case, even a laboratory confirmed one, even an unexpectedly severe one, shouldn't make a news report like this at this point in time.

So why do we have this report? Are there other children ill? Was something else originally suspected?

The overall lack of detail in this report is also noteworthy.
