National Geographic Channel is going behind the scenes of the BP oil spill, the environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Gulf Oil Spill debuts on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 9:00 p.m. ET on National Geographic Channel. The National Geographic special will contain never-before-seen video shot by salvage crews as they battled to get close to the burning rig.
It's one of America's biggest environmental disasters and the largest oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico since 1979. Now, as experts scramble to stop the oil leak, NGC will reveal what happened to the Deepwater Horizon as a blowout tore it apart, killing 11 of the 126 men on board, sending oil toward the coastlines of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.
British Petroleum and the United States government is still figuring out how to plug the hole that is gushing oil into t he waters of the Gulf of Mexico. According to information from NGC, experts estimated that the damage will cost billions of dollars to clean up. The spill covers 4,000 square feet of ocean surface, over ten times the size of New York City.
