700 birds to be culled following bird flu scare

Ahmedabad, Jan 3(PTI) The Gujarat Animal Husbandry Department today decided to cull around 700 birds kept at an animal care centre near the city after some of the Guinea fowls brought here from Mumbai were found to be infected with Avian Influenza, commonly known as Bird flu.

The animal care centre is run by a city based NGO 'Asha Foundation' at Hathijan village on the outskirts of city.

Adhering to Centre's guidelines to control Bird flu from spreading further, authorities have sealed the premises and declared the 1-km area surrounding the centre as 'Affected Zone' while 10-km area has been declared as 'Alert Zone', said a release by the state government.

"We found symptoms of Bird flu in 7 Guinea fowls, which had died under mysterious circumstances few days back. They were among 200 such birds which were rescued in Mumbai and then sent to Asha Foundation on December 28. Laboratory tests confirmed that all of them had died due to Bird flu," said Patel, who reached the spot today to supervise culling.

Last avian flu death in state was in 2006

Ahmedabad: Not so long ago, on September 5, 2016, the Union department of animal husbandry, dairying and fisheries had declared India free of the dreaded H5N1 avian flu virus, after a massive culling operation at Humnabad in the Bidar district of Karnataka. After that, Delhi, Keranga village in Odisha on December 26, 2016 and now Ahmedabad in Gujarat on January 1, have reported comebacks by the deadly virus, which, according to health officials has a 60% mortality rate if transmitted into humans.

Dreaded bird flu reported in city

Ahmedabad: The dreaded avian flu or bird flu has again reared its head in Ahmedabad city. This is the second coming of the H5N1 virus in Gujarat, while the first was reported in 2006.
The state animal husbandry department on Tuesday confirmed that seven samples from bird carcasses and three blood serum samples from live birds, retrieved from birds at the facility of the Asha Foundation NGO at Hathijan, tested positive for bird flu. The samples were sent to National Institute of High Security Animal Disease (NIHSAD) in Bhopal.
