On 21 March 2023, the Ministry of Health of Guinea notified WHO of a confirmed fatal case of Lassa fever in a three-year-old male child from the Kobela health area, Nzerekore health district. The date of onset of symptoms was 13 March 2023, with fever, asthenia, anorexia, and dry cough. On 20 March 2023, the child was taken to the regional hospital for medical attention due to the persistence of the disease. On 21 March 2023 the child presented with bleeding from the mouth and blackish blood from the anus. Laboratory tests on the blood sample taken the same day were positive for Lassa fever varus. The child died in the community, in a remote village, after escaping from the hospital. A safe and dignified burial was not performed. Public health measures are being taken.

Gueckedou: Médecins Sans Frontières supports the fight against Lassa Fever

Faced with the increase in cases of Lassa Fever in Gueckedou in recent years, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has taken a significant step to support the Gueckedou Epidemic Treatment Center.

In recent years, the Gueckedou prefecture has been repeatedly confronted with cases of Lassa fever, a potentially serious, even fatal, viral disease. This situation posed a significant challenge to public health in the prefecture requiring an immediate and effective response.

In response to this worrying situation, MSF, a globally renowned medical humanitarian organization, has taken the initiative to provide an essential donation of medical equipment and essential inputs. This approach aims to strengthen the capacities of the Gueckedou Epidemic Treatment Center to better care for patients suffering from Lassa Fever.

The humanitarian initiative of Médecins Sans Frontières represents a significant step in the fight against Lassa Fever in Gueckedou. It strengthens the capacity of local health workers to diagnose, treat and prevent the spread of this potentially deadly disease.

It is important to note that since May until today, the Gueckedou region has recorded 6 confirmed cases of Lassa Fever, including unfortunately 1 death. Three of these cases occurred in the last 60 days.

The Lassa Fever situation in Gueckedou is taken seriously, and thanks to the support of Médecins Sans Frontières, the region is now better prepared than ever to face this threat. This donation reflects the collective commitment to fighting epidemics and protecting the health of vulnerable communities.

The continued mobilization of resources and efforts to prevent, detect and treat Lassa Fever remains crucial to guaranteeing the health security of the Gueckedou prefecture and the whole of Guinea.

The precious donation offered by Médecins Sans Frontières was gratefully received by the heads of the units of the care department, in the presence of their counterparts from the logistics department, acting on behalf of the general management. This reception demonstrates the coordination and collective commitment of the leaders of these key departments of the National Health Security Agency (ANSS) in the fight against Lassa Fever in Gueckedou.
