Adverse reactions to dog vaccines are rare, but Michael says it will ease his heartache if he can raise awareness and keep someone else from losing their best friend. "I am not trying to scare you out of doing vaccines. I just want you to be aware that after so many vaccines you should really check the titer level," said Hays.
"Educating yourself is the most important thing to do regarding the vaccinations," said Dr. Keller.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) says pet owners need to work with their veterinarians to determine the best schedule of immunizations for their pet.
