After hoping to avoid the new coronavirus, Greenland had its first case confirmed on March 16 in a Nuuk resident who had travelled abroad.

The infected person went into quarantine.

And after there were more confirmed infections in Nuuk, the city, with a population about 18,000, imposed a lockdown on March 18 for three weeks.

The lockdown also includes scheduled flights.

As of today, there are 10 confirmed COVID-19 infections in Greenland...

While Europe battles the deadly pandemic, not one person has yet died from corona in Greenland, the world's largest island, and not one is in intensive care — at least not at the time of writing.

The pandemic may yet strike hard — dangerously hard — in Greenland with its scattered population of some 57,000 and a limited health care system.

- It would take relatively few seriously ill patients on Greenland, the world's ... But so far only 11 people have been found to be bearers of the virus

All 11 Coronavirus patients in Greenland have now recovered. It is now the only affected country/territory with no active cases.

The above report has not been verified. Below is the official report - which shows an encouraging 10 recoveries.

As of the 27th May, there are a few active cases of COVID-19 in Greenland. In an extension of the Danish government’s border closures (for non-Danes who don’t have a recognised or essential purpose for entering Denmark), Greenland’s police has stated that the borders to the rest of the Danish realm are closed.

On the 14th of May, the government of Greenland presented a 3 phase plan for reopening Greenland. The time interval between the individual phases will at least be approx. 3 weeks as the effect of the gradual opening can only be assessed after a period exceeding the incubation period for the disease.

PHASE ONE begins on the 15th June.

600 passengers may fly to Greenland each week.

The following conditions must be included:
  • The reproduction factor must be below 1 and the proportion of infected persons in the population does not exceed 5%.
  • Pre-existing conditions must still be maintained and will be closely monitored. Regulations can be tightened in the coming weeks if deemed necessary.
....
Departure at your own risk:
  • If you get infected in Greenland, you must be prepared to bear your own expenses associated with staying in hospital and returning home.
  • If you are a Greenlandic resident who departs Greenland and gets infected, you will not be able to return to the country until you have tested negative for COVID-19. All expenses associated with rebooking your stay and flight tickets must be borne by you.
