Tropical I love that it is free to the end user too but it is not free to provide water or gather and distribute news. It may be that governments think it is worth informing their populations so they can make informed decisions - enough of them work hard in the other direction - they may also decide water is a basic right and should be provided free to the user. In each case someone is paying for water treatment and distribution or news gathering and dissemination. I am not sure I want governments funding news, as I do not think many of them could resist some level of editorial control. In my country if you want to watch TV - even if you only watch commercial channels - you have to buy a TV license (about 160euros/year/household) this is used to fund the BBC which provides 4 National TV channels (+ local programing), 5 national radio stations (+local) and online news. The BBC's charter guarantees editorial independence which the corporation and public take very seriously.

The water comparison hit home for me.
Years ago, we owned and operated a small sub sandwich shop.
The neighborhood was full of apartment buildings.
People from the neighborhood would often come in and ask for ice water.
A few of them got angry and abusive when we told them there was a 10 cent charge.

We would explain that the cups, lids, straws and ice are not free for us but they rarely understood. We repeatedly were told water is free, which of course is NOT true.

As prepdeb said in post#22, today water is of course not free.

And if you folks "out there" want to came to the same point with free news gatherings as we are all with water and similar, don't "cry" after ...

It is enaugh an high rank taken decision, that many forgot how they behave and live the last ~15 years about internet reacheable news.

All that FT construction could said good bye to independent collecting, apart e-mails tips, if subjected to pay copyrights or to find continuous donations, for every fresh published news.

Maybe to divert the next barriers, it is time to switch to FT T-shirts production sustainment as some did ...

In fact, we/many already payed the minutes/hours/... spended surfing the internet.

To pay for every bit of daily living things is a no brainer foraging of infinite years of imposed levels of copyrights.
I remember a sf movie where the actor must put a coin into the flat-house-box door every time he wants to get out or in ... :[

If open source programs could exists and it works without payings, than the same could be with the news gatherings.

The absurd of our society. We are in a pandemic, and stil many scientists retain exper./lab. results if part of a project supposed to be patented, even such patents reach future viruses.
Or for agribusiness were created non-renovable plants for seeding, so you must buy seeds every time, instead of collect them itself from the plant, as it is naturaly from milions of years.
