TNN, Jun 2, 2010, 06.36am IST

PANAJI: Chikungunya and dengue, the incidence of which recorded a massive increase in the state last year, are posing a big health hazard this year too. In the first four months of the year, 167 chikungunya and 82 dengue cases have already been recorded.

From just 22 chikungunya cases in 2006, the number rose to 685 last year. Similarly, the number of dengue-affected persons went up from one in 2006 to 277 in 2009.
In fact, the number has been gradually rising over the years?24 chikungunya and 36 dengue cases in 2007 and 21 chikungunya and 43 dengue cases in 2008.

The good news is that malaria cases, on the other hand, are on the decline?from 1,561 in the first four months of 2009 to 582 in corresponding period this year.
