Ghana Records First Monkeypox Cases

The cases were confirmed in the Eastern, Great Accra and Western regions, the Director-General of the GHS, Dr Patrick Kuma- Aboagye said today at a press conference in Accra.

“So far since the outbreak in Europe occurred, we tested 12 suspected cases in Ghana since 24 May. Currently, we have confirmed five cases in three regions – Eastern, Western, and Greater Accra – this is where we discovered the five cases,” he said.

Dr. Kuma-Aboagye said no death has been recorded yet out of the five cases...

Ghana joins the list of countries reporting monkeypox infection among humans in the African region. On 8 June 2022, the country reported five confirmed cases detected out of 12 suspected cases sampled between 24 May and 8 June 2022. The cases were reported from the Eastern, Western, and Greater Accra regions.

Monkeypox cases increased to 18 — GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) says confirmed cases of Monkeypox has increased from five in the last update to 18 which represent 25.0 per cent.

Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director General of the GHS, said the confirmed cases were among the 72 suspected cases of Monkeypox which was investigated as of June 17, 2022.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye made this known during a press conference in Accra to provide a current update on public health outbreaks in the country and said the last confirmed case of Monkeypox was on June 14.

He said Regions with confirmed cases include, Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono and Eastern, and the age of the affected persons range from nine months to 41 years with no death recorded.

The Director General stated that out of the affected persons 39 per cent were females and 61 per cent males adding that Ghana was currently dealing with multiple public health emergencies-COVID-19, Monkeypox...

Bono East Region records first case of monkeypox

The Bono East Region has recorded one case of Monkeypox disease.

Authorities have assured the public that the Regional Coordinating Council and health authorities are working tirelessly to prevent it from spreading.

The patient is a worker at Techiman.

Some eight other people whose samples were taken for laboratory tests and later confirmed positive are said to be responding well to treatment while in isolation.

Regional Minister Kwasi Adu-Gyan confirmed this in Techiman during the inauguration ceremony of the 9-member Bono East Regional Health Committee...

Ghana: Greater Accra has more than 50 Per cent of monkeypox cases

The total confirmed cases of the monkeypox outbreak in Ghana is now 34 with the cases recorded in six regions. More than 50 percent of cases are in the Greater Accra Region.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has said Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Eastern and Upper West are the regions where the cases have been identified.

The monkeypox outbreak was Saturday (July 23, 2022) declared a global Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The classification is the highest alert that the WHO can issue and follows a worldwide upsurge in cases.

It came at the end of the second meeting of the WHO's emergency committee on the virus.

Ghana cases

The last confirmed case in Ghana was on July 15th 2022 and the ages of cases range from 9 months to 45 years.

No fatality has been recorded among cases with majority of cases being male, according to the GHS...

One person dead after contracting monkeypox

One person in the Upper East Region has been confirmed dead after testing positive for monkeypox.

The Upper East Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi confirmed this to JoyNews. According to him, this is the region’s first monkeypox case.

In a press release, he indicated that “the confirmed case was seen on the 22 July 2022 at the Upper East Regional Hospital with history of fever and skin rash.”

“Unfortunately, the case died on the 26th of July 2022. Samples were taken on July 22, 2022, for confirmation at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) in Accra. We received feedback on July 28, 2022, indicating the sample tested positive for Monkeypox disease.”

Dr Dzotsi added that 13 contacts close to the confirmed case have been identified for contact follow-up and monitoring.

Monkeypox: Deceased in Bolgatanga was a soldier - Health Directorate

A soldier with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has died of Monkeypox in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional Health Directorate has said.

He was admitted at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital and passed on three days later.

He was admitted at the hospital on July 23, 2022 with symptoms of the disease but died on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 while receiving treatment...

On 8 June 2022, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service confirmed that 5 cases of monkeypox have been detected in the country. From 24 May-28 August 2022, there have been 373 suspected cases, including 56 confirmed and three deaths reported from nine of the 16 administrative regions. Most of the positive cases were reported from the Greater Accra region. Of the confirmed cases, 33 (58.9%) are males; 23 are females (41.1%). The age of confirmed cases ranges from 4
months to 67 Years (min-max).
