BERLIN - German health authorities say at least 4,000 children have fallen ill with vomiting and diarrhea after eating food from school canteens and daycare centres.

But it says all facilities where the illness occurred likely received food from a single supplier, indicating it was a food-borne illness such as norovirus.

Mystery virus sickens German school children

An outbreak of an unknown virus in eastern Germany has made 4,000 school children ill. It is believed contaminated school lunches are to blame, causing excessive vomiting and diarrhoea among young sufferers.

Anke Protze who works for the Chemnitz Health Bureau, explains the nature of the illness.

?There are serious and not so serious cases - some children had to be hospitalised. With this sickness you have an enormous loss of fluids and minerals. That means the first thing to do is not give antibiotics but replace the fluids,? she said.

Several schools have closed their doors as a precautionary measure. All eyes are now on catering company Sodexo, which supplies all the schools hit by the bug.

Authorities in Berlin and the surrounding eastern German states reported the new gastroenteritis cases Saturday, while laboratory investigations to determine the exact cause of the outbreak were still underway.

Description -- The Chinese government says no food poison-causing noroviruses have been detected in leftover frozen strawberries from products exported to Germany.

The announcement refutes the German government's allegations that noroviruses are likely to have caused the food poisoning that affected more than 11,000 German school children.

The children had diarrhea and other food poisoning symptoms after eating the frozen strawberries in late September and early October.

The German authorities say they detected the norovirus in the products.

The German government said on Wednesday that insufficient heat treatment in China had probably caused the food poisoning.

China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said on Thursday that it had inspected a warehouse of the food-processing company that exported the strawberries.

The quality watchdog said it didn't find the norovirus in samples of products in the warehouse. It said the company's frozen strawberries exported to other countries had not caused any problems.

It added there is no scientific basis for the German allegations, and the German side needs to conduct further investigations into the possibility that the contamination occurred in Germany.
