21 days after the cat death in Rollwitz became known, the district administration announced on request which animal disease had killed the kitties. The tomcat, who was autopsied, was diagnosed with "parvovirus, a contagious viral infection with severe diarrhea, as well as colisepsis and campylobacteriosis," said district spokesman Florian Stahlkopf.

"The parvovirus of the cat, also cat disease, is a viral infection, especially in young and unvaccinated cats," says the veterinary office. “The virus that causes it is found everywhere and is extremely resilient. It is transmitted through feces or contaminated objects or feed.”

Veterinarians recommend vaccination

The Standing Veterinary Vaccination Committee recommends vaccinating every cat. The basic immunization can begin at the age of 8, 12 and 16 weeks and a repeat at the age of 15 months. Booster vaccinations should be given every 3 years.

The examination for the avian influenza virus, the avian influenza virus, was negative. At the beginning of August, four dead or dying cats were found in Rollwitz and a fifth in Löcknitz. Members of the association Katzenschutz Pasewalk suspected bird flu, which was killing cats in Poland at the same time. They froze one of the dead animals and pressed the veterinary office for an autopsy to combat animal diseases. There, however, they had fallen on deaf ears at the first attempt, which meant that an enormous amount of time had passed. The news that the mostly deadly parvovirus is active in Western Pomerania should be alarming for cat owners.
