Researchers find "smoking gun": EHEC-bacteria on sprouts from company in Bienenbüttel in home of patients

Hamburg / Dusseldorf - For the first time Health authorities have apparently found the EHEC pathogen on sprouts. This can prove a direct relation to the suspect organic farm in the district of Uelzen.

This is the aggressive serotype O104, said NRW Consumer Protection Minister John Remmel on Friday in Dusseldorf. It was found in an open package that was already in the garbagecan of a household in the Rhein-Sieg Region.

Two of the three family members living in this household have eaten sprouts in mid- May, they got the EHEC bacterial illness.

This is the first time an unbroken chain was found from patients to the infected sprouts from the farm in Bienenbüttel, which were probably prepared by ill people.
