Poultry sales fell by up to 90 percent
during last year's bird flu scare

Last year, the bird flu panic that swept through most of the world dramatically hurt Georgia's growing poultry and egg industry. Chicken and eggs practically disappeared from stores (as well as Georgians' yards).

Concern is heightened again as spring approaches and there have been reports of the bird flu in Russia and Abkhazia.

According to official data, there are more than 20 large and medium poultry enterprises in Georgia as well as approximately 1500 small businesses employing more than 10 000 people. Nearly 50 percent of the chicken sold in Georgia and 70 percent of the eggs consumed in Georgia are locally produced.

According to the Statistics Department, in 1995, 10 000 tons of chicken were produced, in 2002 - 13 200 tons, in 2003 - 13 400 tons and in 2004 - 15 200 tons reports the newspaper Rezonansi.

During the height of the bird flu panic, poultry sales decreased by 80-90 percent in Georgia.
