The department of health has admitted that the full extent of the drug-resistant strain of tuberculosis designated as XDR-TB is not known, and it is hoped that the World Health Organisation (WHO) will be able to help in this area.
Lindiwe Mvusi, the departmental TB control manager, has made the comments following the disclosure that the WHO is sending a permanent staff member to South Africa to help the country contain the outbreak.
So far, 269 cases of XDR-TB have been confirmed countrywide. The medical journal, The Lancet says the TB expert will advise the health department on how to deal with the outbreak, which has spread to all nine provinces.
