Chikungunya spreads moderately in French Guiana
By Catherine Lama Published 06/16/2014
Since the month of December 2013, 318 cases of chikungunya have been reported throughout Guyana. Figures which position the department to phase 2b Psage of which corresponds to a moderate transmission contrary to the Caribbean currently undergoing epidemic phase.
Chikungunya is not progressing dramatically in Guyana but extends more particularly in the area of Cayenne. Of the 318 cases recorded, 58 are indigenous cases and a large majority (66%) are located in Cayenne, the town hardest hit, which develops most of epidemics.
If Macouria, Matoury Rémire-Montjoly, Kourou under supervision is not talking about the other coastal cities including St. Lawrence is the second most populous city in French Guiana.
In conclusion, even if the virus circulation intensifies with the emergence of new homes, our region remains in Phase 2 Pasge (Program Monitoring, alerting and management of emergence of Chikungunya virus) which corresponds to a moderate autochthonous transmission.
Preventive measures are always taken - Wear long clothing in the impregnating insecticde - Sleeping under a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide if possible - Use an effective repellent regularly at the beginning and end of the day.
