PARIS - A 56-YEAR-OLD disabled woman with pre-existing health problems has become mainland France's second H1N1 flu patient to die, the national health monitoring agency said on Monday.
France's European homeland has so far escaped relatively lightly from the A(H1N1) pandemic, with the only previous fatality being a young woman with a serious lung infection who died in Britanny on July 30.
France's Pacific Ocean territories of New Caledonia and French Polynesia have been worse hit, with five and three fatalities respectively, despite the relatively tiny size of their populations.
These islands, along with the Indian Ocean territory of Reunion, are in the southern hemisphere and thus already going through their winter flu season.
France was to send a nine-strong team of emergency medical reinforcements to French Polynesia later Monday, both to help local officials contain and treat the outbreak and to learn lessons ahead of the northern hemisphere winter. -- AFP
