Fourth swine flu death reported in NJ

TRENTON, N.J. - The swine flu virus has claimed a fourth life in New Jersey.

State health officials say a 36-year-old Union County man died June 3 in Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, two days after he was hospitalized there with a cough and fever. They said the man , whose name was not disclosed , had underlying medical conditions, but did not provide further details.

The state lab confirmed Friday that he had the H1N1 virus.

The three previous swine flu victims , whose deaths were all announced this week , were a 15-year-old Somerset County boy, a 10-year-old Sussex County boy and a 49-year-old northern New Jersey man.

New Jersey currently has 465 confirmed cases of swine flu in 19 counties and 248 probable cases.

CENTRAL JERSEY ? A Union County man has died after being infected with the H1N1 influenza virus, better known as swine flu, state health officials announced Friday afternoon.

The man, a 36-year-old, was hospitalized June 1 at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth and died two days later. He was the state's fourth reported swine flu fatality, but may have been the first to die. The disease also is being blamed for the deaths of a 15-year-old Somerset County male who died June 8, a 49-year-old Essex County man who died June 13 and a 10-year-old Sussex County boy who died June 17.

A Trinitas spokeswoman said Friday evening that the Union County man's identity and hometown were not available, but that the facility for several months has had precautions in place to isolate possible swine flu victims from the general hospital population.

The man, who suffered from underlying medical conditions, was admitted to the hospital suffering from a cough and fever, according to state officials...

...To date, New Jersey has 465 confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza in 19 of its 21 counties, including all but Cape May and Salem. Essex County has the most cases, with 51, while Middlesex and Hudson have 42 apiece. Union, Somerset and Hunterdon counties have 21, 20, and nine cases, respectively.

The state also has 248 probable cases pending confirmatory testing in the state lab. Nationally, there are 21,449 confirmed and probable cases in 50 states. There have been 180 deaths worldwide, including 87 deaths in the United States. Approximately 88 countries worldwide have confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza...
