Massachusetts Mosquitoes Lockdown : SELMA, AL — In a bid to curb the spread of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), four towns in Northeastern Massachusetts have implemented a voluntary evening lockdown following the confirmation of the first human case of the disease in the state since 2020.
Affected Towns and Lockdown Details
Douglas, Oxford, Sutton, and Webster are the communities enacting this precautionary measure. The lockdown, effective immediately, recommends that residents remain indoors from 6:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. starting October 1, and continue through the first hard frost. This timeframe coincides with the peak mosquito activity hours, from dusk until dawn.
Oxford Board of Health has spearheaded the initiative, with their spokesperson emphasizing the critical nature of the situation. “It is the Board of Health’s responsibility to protect public health, and we take EEE very seriously. We are strongly encouraging residents to follow these recommendations due to the severity of EEE and its presence in our community,” the spokesperson said.
