Former state representative Sharon Dobbins dies after bout with pneumonia

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? Former state representative Sharon Dobbins, who took over her husband's seat after he resigned as part of a plea deal, has died after suffering from pneumonia.

She was 44.

House Speaker Robbie Wills says Dobbins was hospitalized Monday at Baptist Health Medical Center for pneumonia and that her death was sudden.

Wills called Dobbins a champion of health care issues who worked to improve access to health care for underprivileged Arkansans. When the Joint Budget Committee convened Thursday morning, members began with a moment of silence for Dobbins.

Her husband, Dwayne Dobbins, resigned from the House in 2005 to settle a felony sexual assault charge. Sharon Dobbins was elected that year and served until 2008.

Former state Representative Sharon Dobbins died Wednesday at the age of 44.

State Senator Tracy Steele says Dobbins went to the hospital Monday with a severe cold but was diagnosed with double pneumonia. He said her family is struggling with her death.

Dobbins won a special election in 2005 after her husband Dwayne resigned from the District 39 seat as part of a plea agreement to a harassment charge. Prosecutors said he had fondled a 17-year-old girl.

In 2008, Dwayne filed to run for the District 39 seat again shortly before the filing deadline. The state Democratic Party refused to certify him for the ballot and the House of Representatives passed a rule barring anyone from returning to the House who resigned from their seat as part of a plea deal. Sharon was the only dissenting vote.

Sharon was an advanced practice nurse, according to the Arkansas 86th General Assembly directory. She was a member of the Delta A.M.E. Church in North Little Rock. No funeral arrangements had been made Wednesday evening.
