Ontario?s public health officials appealed to residents Thursday to get the flu shot as seasonal-influenza activity continued to surge unabated ? a seven-fold increase in the province compared to previous years.
?Predicting flu is worse than predicting the weather. It does come. And it has come, and struck most in the GTA area and we?re dealing with that at this time,? David Williams, Ontario?s associate chief medical officer of health, told reporters.
There were more than 700 lab-confirmed influenza cases last week, compared to the 100 or so cases the province sees over the same period in other years. Eighty more people were hospitalized and there were about seven deaths associated with influenza in one week alone. ?It is something to not be taken lightly,? Dr. Williams said....
