Flu spreads in Australia; alert status may be changed on June 12

WHO keeps close eye...

Australia's swine flu caseload hit 1260 last night, with multiple new infections reported in Queensland, NSW, Western Australia, South Australia and the ACT.

Victoria's total remained unchanged at Monday's figure of 1011, with the state abandoning efforts to publish data on the disease's spread on a daily basis...

The National Pandemic Emergency Committee will meet tomorrow to decide whether to upgrade the national pandemic alert status from "contain" to "sustain", after the Australian Health Protection Committee reviewed the virus's interstate spread yesterday.

Victoria is already in a "modified sustain" stage, allowing it to do less mass tracing, testing and quarantining of contacts and target its resources to nursing homes, special schools and other at-risk populations.
