Flu Keeps Thousands of Boise School Students Home
The flu evidently kept some 3,000 students home sick Monday.
Absenteeism in at least four schools in the Boise School District was higher than normal, due to students coming down with flu-like symptoms.
By the end of the school day Monday, according to District spokesman Dan Hollar, "We had $88.43% of students in attendance. Normally, schools throughout the Boise School District have 96% of students in attendance."
The schools hit the hardest were Horizon and Whittier Elementaries, and North and Hillside Junior High Schools.
Hollar said Horizon reported 134 absences out of a total of 735 students who attend the school; Whittier had 86 absences out of 370 students; North Junior High had 274 out of 868; and Hillside Junior High reported 142 students out sick out of 507.
"We continue to stress personal hygiene measures to the students," Hollar said, encouraging students not to put their hands in their mouths or eyes. "And if students come down with flu-like symptoms, we encourage them to stay home until they are fever-free without medications."
