Flu closes school (Texas)

HALLSBURG - Superintendent Kent Reynolds closed Hallsburg independent school district for Thursday and Friday after the number of students out sick grew to 30 percent.
"I was sitting by a few one of them," said third grader Kimber Bray when asked about her classmates who went home sick. "One of them is my friends and she was sick and then I'm sitting right in front of my cousin that was sick."
Almost half of the third grade class was out sick. Janitors at the school spent the last few days disinfecting the school building.
"I know one friend's is sick because she fell asleep in class because her medicine kind of made her tired," said Bray. "I miss my friends."
Many parents have had to stay home to take care of their children. Even those without children are staying home in attempts to not spread the virus.

"Everybody is sick at work," said Shawn May-Bray, Kimber's mother. "It seems like it's going down the line where I work from desk to desk someone else has gotten it."

Reynolds consulted with the health department and decided to hold classes on Wednesday and then close the school for the rest of the week.
Thursday, janitors disinfected the building, cleaning all surfaces and sanitizing the floors to make sure any viruses in the facility were killed.

I am grateful that the school closed and allowed for time for those who were ill to get better. I am also appreciative of the fact that as inconvenient as it is to have unplanned days off of school, I would so much rather my children not be exposed any more than necessary to the "bugs" going around. (Better two now than possibly a week later!) I commend Mr. Reynolds and the administrative staff for making a decision that was likely not "cut and dry" but definately in the best interest of their students! That is a big part of what makes me proud that my children are Hallsburg students! The kids will be making the days up later, so there will likely be less disruption to the over-all learning process this way.

My child attends this school and is one of the unfortunate that was diagnosed with the flu. He did receive his flu shot from, but this particular strain was not covered. It is much better that they closed the school and did not make all of the kids and teachers miss the days of class and get behind in their work. This particular school does everything they can to take care of the kids and it is a wonderful school.

sounds like they should ddo this state wide, lots of kids in lots of different schools are sick along with the teachers...

If people would stop pumping their kids full of tylenol and then sending their kids to school sick perhaps this wouldn't have happened to start with!

To someone- you know some people still get what they call the flu even if they DO get the flu shot. Not everyone is as lucky as you are and not get.

"Someone", you do realize that you can still get the flu even after recieveing the vaccine, right? There are many strains of the flu... think before you speak.

SEEMS LIKE THIS SHOULD OF HAPPENED ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO. THEY HAVE HAD ALOT OF SICK KIDS GOING TO SCHOOL AND JUST NOW DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. RIESEL NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS ALSO, THEY HAD 60 KIDS AND 9 TEACHERS OUT A COUPLE WEEKS AGO.

When I was diagnosed with the flu earlier this week, my doctor said that this particular strain of the flu was proving to infect people regardless of whether or not they had gotten a flu shot. You people are all immunization happy. Vaccines do not solve all health problems.

This is the main reason people should get their flu shots in October!!!!!
