Norovirus outbreak not seen in Southwest Florida

A new and really unpleasant stomach virus is spreading quickly throughout the country, but Sarasota and Manatee counties have so far been spared.

Dianne Shipley, health educator for the Sarasota County Health Department, said no known cases of the new strain of the norovirus have been confirmed. The older, more common type of norovirus is here, but in numbers and misery-levels typical for January.

Volusia County is investigating one outbreak at an assisted-living facility that might have caused two deaths.

Last week, an outbreak of the virus at the Atrium at Gainesville Independent Senior Living Community caused the facility to keep all residents inside their rooms, with food brought to them.

?We've had pockets since October, and we are trending with the rest of the nation,? said Nadia Kovacevich, an epidemiologist at the Alachua County Health Department. ?It's very feisty. It can live on surfaces unless they are properly disinfected. It takes just one person.?

Local schools inform parents about norovirus stomach flu

The norovirus has affected many schools and hospitals across Alachua County. After an outbreak last week in a senior-living community in Gainesville, local schools are taking precautions to help prevent an outbreak.

Six elderly residents at the Atrium at Gainesville, an independent-senior-living community, have contracted the norovirus, and officials fear the virus could spread. The virus is highly contagious and can be transmitted from contaminated food, drinks, surfaces and contact with other people infected.
