TAMPA, FL -- The mother of a 12-year-old boy was in shock when she learned her son had swine flu. The CDC confirmed he was one of 6 confirmed cases in Hillsborough County on Friday.
'Where this came from was bizarre. He never leaves the house he is a homebody. He has not been anywhere he has not had contact with anybody. We have not been to Mexico and we don't know anyone from Mexico," she said.
ABC Action News is not identifying the Wilson Middle School student and his mother because of the sensitive nature of this story. The 12-year-old's case prompted health officials to shut down Wilson Middle School, his brother high school, Freedom High, and nearby Liberty Middle School because those schools shared a cafeteria. Thousands of students were kept home even though the youngster's case had not officially been confirmed at the time.
"I think that was a great idea. You know a really good idea. You can't be cautious enough when you don't know. We are talking about our kids."
But late Tuesday, CDC officials announced the swine flu was not as severe as first feared and schools reopened earlier than expected. This mother urges parents, despite the promising news, to stay on guard because health officials are still concerned the swine flu may become even stronger. There is still no vaccine.
The 12-year-old appears fine now and is back to his normal everyday activities. But, his mother says, unlike the regular flu, this strain caused her son to be even more ill. He was bedridden for three days. She believes warning signs are an extremely high fever, her son's was above 103 degrees and an intense headache.
'That would be the first sign that indicates something is wrong -- high temperature and then a fairly strong headache.
I took him (to the doctor) the following morning and thank God I did because the doctor said you have to take that medication in 48 hours or it won't have any affect.'
That medication is Tamiflu. To date, 104 people in the nation are hospitalized with potential swine flu. While details are not known on every case, doctors have said the virus should be treated with the anti viral medication within 48 hours to be effective.
There are many unknowns, what is still perplexing to this mother is who catches it. The CDC has said they have seen a lot cases in young adults. Her son's illness did not prevent this mom from spending every moment with her son.
'I have been around him the whole time. I am fine. His brother is fine. I don't know how contagious it is because if that is the case we should all have it. We have no mask no nothing we have been cleaning with spray, a lot of lysol. And we have done a lot of hand washing. We have been with him the whole time.'
The 12-yearold said he is feeling fine and is thankful to be alright. He is also happy to be back in school.
