we have a summer wave of flu-B in region 4 , i.e. Florida

St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties


did it happen before ? flu-B-wave in June
why is it ? weather ?
immunity ? there was little flu the last season in Florida


region 3 has some ILI, which apparently is not flu

Week 27: ILI activity in ESSENCE is elevated over previous years at this time
in Region 5 and 7.
No new deaths; total 3

In week 27 there were two influenza or ILI outbreaks reported via EpiCom.
• DeSoto: A correctional institution reported 6/286 residents with ILI. Three specimens were collected and all three tested positive by PCR at
BOL for influenza B. Cases continue to appear in this facility. A total of 37 people were reported with ILI. All ill residents were placed in a
dorm until symptom-free for 72 hours.
• Miami-Dade: An assisted living facility reported that 10/50 residents and 1/20 staff had ILI. Two residents were hospitalized and both
tested positive for influenza B by rapid test. Miami-Dade CHD collected four specimens, all of which tested PCR positive for influenza B at
BOL. A fifth specimen was collected on one of the hospitalized patients and it also tested PCR positive for influenza B at BOL.
Five influenza or ILI outbreaks were reported via EpiCom in summer 2011-12.

ILI: 1.3%
ED ILI: 1.6% (Age-specific trends show that percent ILI in the 0-55+ age group is increasing in week 27)
45% positive for influenza: all B

46.2% positive for influenza: A(H3) and B

In week 28 there were two influenza or ILI outbreaks reported via EpiCom.
? Alachua: A summer camp in a neighboring county reported 24/160 campers with ILI. Rapid influenza testing was performed on four
campers, three campers tested rapid antigen positive for influenza B. The fourth camper tested positive for influenza by rapid test at a local
pediatrician; subtype information is unavailable. ACHD advised the camp of prevention and control measures.
? Orange: A tour group from South America reported 28/650 group members with ILI. Orange County Health Department (OCHD) collected
five specimens, all of which tested positive for influenza A H3 at BOL. Two other group members tested rapid-antigen test positive for
influenza A at a local healthcare facility. Most group members had not received seasonal influenza vaccination. OCHD recommended
control and prevention measures. Investigation is ongoing.
Seven influenza or ILI outbreaks were reported via EpiCom in summer 2011-12.
