Florida 2009-2010 Flu Season

Re: Florida in Week 9-- 2 New deaths (total 210)

Re: Florida in Week 9-- 2 New deaths (total 210)

Week 9: sporadic

2 New Deaths; total 210

ILI: 1.52% (decreasing except in Southwest Region)
ED visits increasing among 19 years and under and in all Regions except Region 4
Positive Percent: 11.3% (decreasing)

P&I: 136 deaths (no excessive deaths)

1 confirmed or suspect outbreaks of novel influenza A (H1N1) or ILI was reported during week 9 (ending March 6, 2010) This is the second week in a row that ILI outbreaks have been reported into EpiCom. Although this outbreak was not reported until week 9, it occurred during week 8 (ending February 27); this delay in reporting contributed to our decision to report localized activity for week 9.

Re: Florida in Week 10-- No New deaths (total 210)

Week 10: sporadic

Recently we have seen increases in some of our surveillance systems consistent with previous winter influenza seasons, although influenza-like activity (ILI) remains low in many of these monitoring systems. No counties reported widespread influenza activity, the highest activity level, and 3 reported localized activity. We will continue to monitor for a resurgence of influenza activity.

ILI: 1.3% (SW 2.25%; EC 2.28%; NC 4%) rising
Percent positive: 26.9% (rising)
Although state listed as sporadic, localized activity was reported in Duval, Palm Beach, Volusia
RSV: around 9%
P&I: 145 deaths (no excess)

Re: Florida--Weeks 34-35

Re: Florida--Weeks 34-35

Weeks 34-35:
 Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity is low in many of our monitoring systems. Influenza activity levels
seen in ESSENCE and ILINet are similar to previous non-pandemic years at this time.
 The Bureau of Laboratories (BOL) has seen an increase in influenza test submissions and positive
results in recent weeks. In week 34, two specimens tested positive for 2009 H1N1 influenza A and
one was positive for influenza A H3. In week 35, one specimen was positive for influenza A
unspecified.
 RSV activity has been increasing in recent weeks, which corresponds with the beginning of the
normal RSV season in Florida. RSV is a virus that causes mild respiratory illness in adults and
children, and more severe illness in infants and young children. No other pathogens are currently
causing significant levels of influenza-like illness in Florida.

Re: Florida--Weeks 36-37

Weeks 36-37:
Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity is low in many of our monitoring systems. Influenza activity levels seen in ESSENCE and ILINet are similar to previous non-pandemic years at this time.

The Bureau of Laboratories (BOL) has seen an increase in influenza test submissions and positive results in recent weeks. In week 36, two specimens tested positive for influenza A unspecified and five were positive for influenza A H3. In week 37 one specimen was positive for 2009 H1N1, 11 were positive for influenza A H3, and four were positive for influenza B unspecified.

An outbreak of ILI in a Miami-Dade County correctional institution was reported into EpiCom in week 37. Of 47 persons with ILI, five were PCR tested for influenza, and all five were positive for influenza A H3. Control measures have been implemented.

RSV activity has been increasing in recent weeks, which corresponds with the beginning of the normal RSV season in Florida. Re: Florida--Weeks 38-39 (2010)

Weeks 38,39:

Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity is low in many of our monitoring systems. Influenza activity levels seen in ESSENCE and ILINet are similar to previous non-pandemic years at this time.

The Bureau of Laboratories (BOL) has seen an increase in influenza test submissions and positive results in recent weeks. In week 38, three specimens tested positive for influenza A unspecified and three were positive for influenza A H3. In week 39 five specimens were positive for H3, one was positive for A unspecified, and one was positive for influenza B unspecified.

An outbreak of ILI in an Alachua county daycare center was reported into EpiCom in week 39. 8 out of 88 attendees reported ILI, two symptomatic attendees were rapid test positive for influenza A, and one attendee was PCR-positive for influenza A H3. Investigation is ongoing.

RSV activity has been increasing in recent weeks, which corresponds with the beginning of the normal RSV season in Florida. RSV is a virus that causes mild respiratory illness in adults and children, and more severe illness in infants and young children. No other pathogens are currently causing significant levels of influenza-like illness in Florida.
