Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) is responding to the floods disaster that has affected more than 400 families countrywide following torrential rains over the past few weeks.
5th September 2010: At least 64 families were displaced by floods in Sirende area, Trans Nzoia, North Rift Regiion, following heavy rains yesterday. The families have moved to seek temporary shelter within the community, while others are staying in market centers.
Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) North Rift team has carried out an assessment in the affected areas and there are plans to distribute non-food items to the affected populations. Already, humanitarian support is underway in parts of North and South Rift regions that have been affected so far.
3rd September 2010: In North Rift Region, River Sabwani burst its banks affecting at least 30 families in Namanjalala, who have moved to higher grounds. Some 60 families are at risk of flooding in the area. Floods in Chepchoina and Zea area in Kwanza District have displaced more than 200 families. One death has been confirmed, that of a woman who drowned iny River Kiminini.
In South Rift, torrential rains have affected various areas among them:
* Subukia/Lower Ol Kalou ? floods have subsided. KRCS has distributed non-food items (NFI).
* Rongai ? Salgaa town ? floods have been reported. KRCS has carried out rapid assessment.
* Marigat - Kokwo Island in Lake Baringo ? KRCS carried out rapid assessment. At least 11 roof tops were blown out, two classrooms and two toilets destroyed in Kokwo Primary School. At least 22 households were affected by floods and hailstorms. In Sandai and Mbechot locations, a few kilometers from Marigat town, 23 households were displaced by floods, a number of farms destroyed, livestock (chicken, goats and sheep) lost on 30th August 2010. KRCS was to dispatch NFIs to the most vulnerable people displaced by floods.
