A Brazilian hospital has reported the death of a patient from acute myositis caused by the Chikungunya virus - transmitted by the same mosquito that carries the Zika virus - in the first such case in this country and only the fifth worldwide
The infected patient, Danielle Santana, 17, was an Indian of the Xucururu tribe and died last Jan. 7 at Restoration Hospital in the northeastern city of Recife in Pernambuco state.
The teen died of acute myositis, a muscular inflammation with symptoms similar to the Guillain-Barre syndrome, including muscular paralysis, the hospital said.

The case occurred in the state of Pernambuco, precisely the area where the most microcephalic babies have been born, a condition researchers associate with the Zika virus. EFE
