Yemen reports first death from swine flu

Sana'a, Yemen - A 40-year-old Yemeni man has died from swine flu, becoming the Arab country's first death from the H1N1 virus, the official Saba news agency reported Tuesday. The man began to show symptoms of fever and mild flu on August 10 and was admitted to a hospital Saturday in the capital Sana'a, the agency said, quoting Health Minister Abdul-Kareem Rasea as saying.

He was first diagnosed to be suffering from pneumonia, Rasea said.

"His health deteriorated dramatically early on Sunday," the minister said, adding that the patient was moved to the intensive care unit but showed no response to treatment.

Rasea said the patient was diagnosed with H1N1 and given the first dose of medicine only a few hours before his death late Monday.

He said the patient might have contracted the virus from a visiting relative from the United States.

Yemen has recorded 16 cases of swine flu since reporting its first case on June 16 in a student who had returned from an exchange programme in the US.

A 40-year-old Yemeni man has died in Sana?a from the new H1N1 swine flu, becoming the first death in Yemen as a result of the virus, the Public Health and Population Ministry said on Wednesday.

Health Minister Abdul-Karim Rase?a said that the 40-year-old man, originally from the al-Dalea province but currently residing in the capital, was admitted to the hospital in Sana?a on Saturday, August 15, with a high fever, coughs and respiratory problems.

?Subsequently, the hospital reported a suspected case of H1N1 to the Ministry on Monday, August 17 and a laboratory sample was taken which later confirmed their worries. Although the patient was given the first doses of medication against N1H1, he died on the same day?, the minister said.

According to the information available, the man had no recent history of travelling abroad, but he had however spent time with his relatives, who themselves had recently returned from the USA.

The Ministry of Public Health and Population announced on Monday the discovery of two new cases with the deadly H1N1 virus, namely a Yemeni baby and a Yemeni lady, both in transit from two different countries, bringing the total number of cases of infected people in the country to 19.

The ministry said that out of these 19 cases, 16 were to be found in Yemenis recently returned from abroad, while the remaining 4 were transmitted locally. The General Director of Disease Control and Epidemiological Surveillance, Dr. Abdul Hakim Al-Kuhlani said that the two new cases of H1N1 were discovered after relatives notified an official from the influenza surveillance section of the ministry.

The health official confirmed that the two cases have been hospitalized with the required treatment and completely quarantined and isolated.
