Two suspicions of omicrone are being investigated in Finland - both with contact abroad

11/29/2021

Finland is currently investigating two cases of corona suspected of being omicron virus variants. In both cases, the infected person has contact abroad.
Local authorities have ordered those isolated and mapped out their contacts.
To confirm the variant, samples of the suspected omicron variant are sequenced. It takes a few days to get results.
In the two cases observed, suspicions of viral transformation are related to a PCR test result in which a deletion in the S gene has been identified. A similar deletion has occurred with other variants of the coronavirus.

The spread potential of the virus variant is being elucidated

The first observations of the omicronvirus variant were made in November in South Africa and Botswana, as well as in Hong Kong. Cases have now been found in a number of countries, including Europe.
“It is currently being investigated what the potential spread of the new variant is globally. It is also not yet known whether the new variant will be able to circumvent the immune protection obtained through coronary vaccines or the disease, ”says Carita Savolainen-Kopra , a leading expert at THL.
The onset of virus variants is very common and is part of the normal circulation of viruses. Variants can spread and displace previous forms of the virus or be left behind by other variants, as has been seen on several occasions during a corona pandemic. The WHO has added an omicron variant to the variant of concern (VOC) watch list.
