In the second incident, a one-year-old boy from Yanuca Island died at the Navua Hospital after being rushed there by his parents.

Police assistant spokesman Jone Kalouniviti said those were isolated cases of diarrhoea which could have been prevented if parents had taken steps earlier rather than waiting for the status of their children to deteriorate.

These details were provided to a Government delegation visiting the island last week. Ekubu Village headman Eliki Natuna said the outbreak raised serious concerns about the safety of drinking water in the village.

Sigatoka health inspector Vakaruru Cavuilati and Vatulele staff nurse Unaisi Qasivakatini confirmed that while a one-year old died, the sickness has been contained.
