Fiji Conducts Mass Anti-Filarial Drug Campaign

The Minister for Health, Women and Social Welfare, Dr Jiko Luveni says health officials in Fiji will conduct a mass drug administration programme on anti-filarial tablets in November.

This is to raise awareness on lymphatic filariasis and also prevent the spread of this disease.

?It is difficult to know if one has been infected with the parasite because it takes a long period of time before any disfigurement of limb or gland swelling is noticed.

?By then it is late and irreversible,? Dr Luveni said.

Dr Luveni highlighted a survey done in 2007 showed that every person in Fiji above the age of two needs to take these drugs for another 2 yrs to break the transmission of this disease from person to person.

?For this year, the Mass Drug Administration will be conducted by the Ministry of Health staff and volunteers beginning from this month (November).

?They will visit your homes and observe that you take the tablets,? Dr Luveni said.
