Ministry notes rise in dengue

THE number of dengue cases in the country continues to rise with 12 new cases registered since the announcement of 143 cases last week.

There are now 155 confirmed cases, 91 of which are in the Western Division.

National adviser communicable diseases Dr Mike Kama said the Central and Northern divisions had 32 cases each.

"All in all one can say the dengue numbers are rising and the ministry is quite concerned about it," Dr Kama said...

Health Ministry records 913 dengue cases

FIJI has recorded 913 laboratory confirmed positive cases of dengue fever from January 1 to April 2 this year with the bulk of the cases coming from the Central Division.

According to the Health and Medical Services Ministry, there was an average of six hospital admissions weekly with an average length of stay of four days being reported from the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva.

The ministry also recorded one dengue fever-related death at the CWM Hospital Intensive Care Unit this month.

SUVA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Health Ministry in Fiji confirmed on Monday that six people have died of dengue fever in the South Pacific island country this year.

The health ministry said that the island country, which has an estimated population of 902,400 people, records more than 2,200 dengue cases in the first six months of this year...

There has been a notable increase in the number of dengue fever cases in the Macuata province, mainly localised to the Labasa town area in the last four weeks.

The weekly numbers of confirmed dengue cases have surpassed the expected numbers for this time of the year.

With the current trend of cases seen, it is evident that Macuata, and specifically Labasa, is experiencing a surge of dengue fever.

According to the Acting National Advisor Communicable Disease, Dr. Aalisha Sahukhan, as of January 1 2017 to December 17, 2017 a total of 795 laboratory confirmed cases of dengue fever have been recorded in the Northern Division. This is compared to 1207 and 1134 confirmed cases in the Central and Western divisions respectively.

From the week of November 20 to December 17, there have been 279 confirmed cases reported from Macuata, mostly from the Labasa Town area.

The number of confirmed cases per week has ranged from 39-78, with a sustained increase every week...
